Gender & Identity
The Riley School is committed to creating a school culture that is inclusive of all genders and identities.
Riley children decide if and with whom they choose to share their gender identity, transgender status, and/or sexual orientation. There is no expectation that any child disclose sensitive personal information unless they choose to do so. Riley School will use reasonable efforts to honor a child’s requests around disclosure of gender identity and transgender status consistent with legal and ethical obligations.
Riley children decide the name and pronouns they will use. The name they choose to use does not have to match what is on their birth certificate except when required by law.
Bathrooms on the Riley campus are gender-neutral. When Riley children are attending off-campus events where gender-neutral bathrooms are not available, Riley children are supported to use the bathroom corresponding to their chosen gender identity.
Riley School maintains a gender-neutral dress code. Details are available in the School handbook.
On-campus events at Riley School are gender-neutral.
Riley School will make every reasonable attempt to have all off-campus events gender-neutral but recognizes that adequate, gender-neutral options may not always be available. When off campus (field trips, etc.), where gender-neutral programming and facilities are not available, Riley children will be respected as their identifying gender. Those Riley children who identify as non-binary and/or two-spirit will be asked—prior to the event when possible—which gender they would prefer to be associated with during the event. Requests for additional privacy will be honored when possible.
